Through good practice and certification schemes, such as FSCĀ® and PEFC, commercial forestry is encouraged to reduce not only the amount but also the toxicity of chemicals being applied.
Globally, the forestry industry is moving towards a more Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. This is an approach where pesticides are a last resort due to the potentially high and negative impact they could pose on the environment and society. A sustainable IPM programme places emphasis on cultural and biological controls, which have a lower impact on the environment. We need to aim for the incorporation of IPM into Best Operational Practices (BOPs) in order to enhance the sustainability of all forestry operations.
