The common cutworm can single-handedly destroy a newly planted stand and heaven forbid it gets into a nursery. As a result, it is a constant headache for foresters across the country and we are not alone in this. According to a great article in the Farmer’s Weekly by Professors Johnnie van den Berg and Hannalene du Plessis at North-West University’s Integrated Pest Management Research Group, they are also a prominent pest in maize. While the commodity in focus in the article is maize, there is a lot of interesting information about the cutworm that is worth revisiting.
